Job Description
Company: Walmart
Team: Last Mile / Logistics Intelligence
Location: Bentonville, Arkansas, USA
Salary Range: $90,000 – $180,000 + bonus + stock
🧭 Role Mission
This is not a traditional dashboard or modeling role.
The mission is to build an Automated Recommendation Agent that can:
- Detect operational problems
- Diagnose root causes
- Recommend corrective actions automatically
It combines:
- Causal AI
- Time-series forecasting
- Anomaly detection
- Prescriptive analytics
- Large-scale distributed data processing
This is closer to Applied AI Systems Engineering than classic data science.
🚀 Core Responsibilities
1. Anomaly Detection Architecture
Design systems to detect operational irregularities using:
- Forecast vs real-time comparison
- Statistical thresholds
- Unsupervised methods (clustering, outliers)
2. Causal Discovery & Root Cause Analysis
Build automated agents using:
- Causal inference frameworks
- DAGs
- Instrumental variables
- Observational data analysis
Goal: distinguish correlation vs true causation.
3. Prescriptive Recommendation Engine
Move from insight → action:
Examples:
- Rerouting deliveries
- Driver incentives
- Customer notifications
This is decision automation.
4. Forecasting & Simulation
Predict:
- Delivery volume
- Latency
- Driver availability
Then simulate intervention impact.
5. Big Data Engineering
Production-grade work using:
- Python
- SQL
- PySpark
- Distributed datasets (terabytes)
6. Technical Leadership
Evaluate trade-offs:
- Deep learning vs classical statistics
- Scalability vs accuracy
- Real-time vs batch approaches
🧠 Required Technical Depth
Core Stack
- Python (expert)
- SQL (expert)
- PySpark / Databricks / Hadoop
Methodology
Strong knowledge of:
- Causal inference (Do-calculus, DAGs)
- Time-series forecasting (ARIMA, Prophet, ETS)
- Anomaly detection (Isolation Forest, Autoencoders)
- Machine learning
🤖 Unique Aspect — “Agentic” Data Science
They want someone who can build autonomous decision systems, not just analysis.
Mindset:
“Reduce late deliveries” → break into architecture → deploy solution.
This is very modern AI thinking.
⭐ Ideal Candidate Profile
Strong fit if you have:
✅ 4–8 years data science experience
✅ ML + statistics + engineering blend
✅ Experience with large-scale systems
✅ Interest in automation and AI agents
✅ Logistics or supply chain experience (bonus)
📈 Career Level Insight
This is roughly:
Senior Data Scientist (L4–L5 equivalent)
Possible growth path:
Senior → Staff / Principal → Director AI / ML
💡 Why This Role Is High Value
You rarely see roles combining:
- Forecasting
- Causal AI
- Anomaly detection
- Prescriptive optimization
- Autonomous agents
At Walmart scale → huge datasets + real impact.
🔎 Comparison to Other Roles You Shared
Compared to:
- Netflix → more experimentation & product analytics
- SAP → more enterprise ML engineering
- Unilever → more management & strategy
This Walmart role is the most technical + AI-system oriented.
