Job Description
Company: Walmart Inc.
Location: Bentonville, Arkansas, USA
Position Summary
Walmart’s Last Mile team is building the next generation of proactive logistics systems through an Automated Recommendation Agent capable of monitoring network health, detecting anomalies, diagnosing root causes, and prescribing corrective actions.
As a Senior Data Scientist, you will design intelligent systems that move beyond dashboards toward automated decision-making at scale. This role combines forecasting, anomaly detection, causal inference, and prescriptive analytics to improve delivery performance and customer experience across Walmart’s massive logistics network.
Key Responsibilities
Architect the Anomaly Detection Layer
- Design mechanisms to identify irregularities in delivery operations using:
- Time-series forecasting comparisons
- Unsupervised clustering techniques
- Statistical process control thresholds
Build Causal Discovery Agents
- Develop automated root cause analysis (RCA) systems triggered by anomalies.
- Apply causal inference methods to distinguish systemic network issues from localized problems.
Develop Prescriptive Recommendation Engines
- Translate insights into actions by recommending interventions such as rerouting, incentives, or notifications.
- Evaluate intervention effectiveness through simulation and modeling.
Leverage Time-Series Forecasting
- Predict operational metrics including delivery volume, latency, and driver availability.
- Use forecasts for proactive monitoring and scenario planning.
Scale Data Operations
- Write production-grade Python and SQL.
- Use PySpark and distributed systems to process large-scale telemetry and transactional datasets.
Define Strategic Roadmap
- Evaluate modeling approaches (classical statistical vs. deep learning).
- Advise leadership on architecture decisions and value optimization.
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills
- Expert proficiency in Python and SQL
- Strong hands-on experience with PySpark, Databricks, or Hadoop ecosystems
- Experience working with large distributed datasets (terabyte scale)
Methodological Expertise
- Causal Inference: DAGs, Do-calculus, instrumental variables, observational data methods
- Time Series & Forecasting: ARIMA, Prophet, ETS, seasonality and trend modeling
- Anomaly Detection: Isolation Forest, Autoencoders, Statistical Process Control, clustering methods
Mindset & Approach
- Experience building automated decision systems rather than static analyses
- Ability to decompose ambiguous business problems into scalable data science architectures
- Strong problem-solving and system-design thinking
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in logistics, supply chain, or last-mile delivery domains
- Background in optimization or operations research
- Experience deploying ML systems in production environments
- Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive product design
Compensation & Benefits
Salary Range: $90,000 – $180,000 annually
Additional compensation may include performance bonuses and stock awards.
Benefits include:
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) with employer match
- Paid time off and parental leave
- Adoption and family care support
- Education assistance through Walmart’s Live Better U program
- Employee discounts and wellness programs
Why This Role Is Unique
This position offers a rare opportunity to combine:
- Forecasting
- Anomaly Detection
- Causal AI
- Prescriptive Decision Systems
— into a unified autonomous logistics intelligence platform operating at global retail scale.
