Role Summary The Paralegal – Civil Litigation serves as a strategic partner to the General Counsel and Associate General Counsel. This role requires a seasoned professional with deep technical expertise in civil litigation and the capacity to manage complex operations autonomously. The position requires the procedural rigor of a firm applied within a mission-driven context. Responsibilities include modernizing workflows and managing strict statutory deadlines without the need for training on legal fundamentals. Key Accountabilities
• End-to-end management of grievances, arbitrations, and civil litigation. Strict monitoring of statutory deadlines is required to prevent default.
• Independent management of evidence collection. Includes subpoena review and coordination of discovery production effectively and efficiently.
• Management of calendars and tracking of multiple parallel case paths to ensure total operational control.
• Acting as primary contact for elected leadership and members; facilitating effective communication with a remote workforce.
• Maintenance of legal databases and files to ensure instant record retrieval.

Qualifications
• 10+ years of paralegal experience with a concetration in Civil Litigation.
• Comprehensive knowledge of civil procedure, privilege laws, and evidence handling. Immediate operational independence is mandatory.
• A demonstrated professional interest in labor law, public interest work, or union advocacy.
Office Requirements
• Private office provided. In person only.
• Located near Union Station (Metro accessible). Access to subsidized nearby parking and professional transportation accounts for overflow parking is provided.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:
• Litigation Management: Manage the entire lifecycle of grievances, arbitrations, and civil litigation matters. Ensure strict adherence to statutory deadlines (specifically regarding 30-day grievance filing windows) to prevent default.
• Discovery & Evidence: Oversee the collection, organization, and analysis of evidence. Perform first pass reviews of subpoenas and coordinate the production of discovery materials.
• Arbitration Support: Manage the “appeal to arbitration” process, including the collection of briefs and tracking of arbitrator decisions.
• Operational Leadership: Act as the organizational anchor for the Associate General Counsel. Manage complex calendars and track multiple parallel case paths (“10 paths”) to ensure total operational control.
• Process Modernization: Evaluate current administrative methods and implement automated solutions or improved systems to enhance efficiency and replace manual processes.
• Research & Drafting: Conduct substantive legal research and draft clear, professional correspondence and legal documents.
• Stakeholder Liaison: Serve as a primary point of contact for elected political leaders and union members. Facilitate effective communication with a remote workforce, demonstrating patience and professional adaptability.
• Information Management: Maintain legal databases and physical files, ensuring robust organization and swift retrieval of sensitive records.
