Job Overview

Planet 13 is seeking an experienced Freelance Packaging Graphic Designer to support the creative development and production execution of packaging for new product launches and packaging refreshes across multiple markets.

This role focuses on delivering manufacturing-ready, compliant, and brand-consistent packaging, covering everything from concept development to final print files and high-quality 3D renders. The ideal candidate has strong experience in CPG or retail packaging, excellent production knowledge, and confidence working within regulated industries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop packaging concepts, visual directions, and mood boards for new and existing product lines.
  • Translate creative concepts into scalable packaging systems across multiple SKUs and sub-brands.
  • Adapt and create artwork using vendor-provided dyelines, including detailed spec sheets and bill of materials (BOM).
  • Prepare print-ready production files, ensuring proper color modes, spot colors, layers, overprints, trapping, and preflight checks.
  • Produce photorealistic 3D packaging renders and shelf visuals for internal reviews, e-commerce, and marketing use.
  • Accurately place regulatory content such as warnings, symbols, dosage information, UPC/QR codes, and variable data fields in collaboration with Compliance teams.
  • Coordinate with printers and packaging vendors regarding substrates, finishes, proofs, and color accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain packaging guidelines covering brand elements, typography, color systems, icons, and claims usage.
  • Adapt packaging designs for multiple markets, regulatory updates, and language variations while maintaining brand integrity.
  • Organize files, maintain version control, and deliver assets according to Planet 13 standards.
  • Recommend packaging materials and finishes that balance cost, sustainability, and shelf appeal.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating CPG or retail packaging design across various packaging formats (cartons, labels, flexible, rigid, shrink).
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop).
  • Solid understanding of packaging production workflows, printing processes, substrates, and finishes.
  • Experience designing for regulated industries (cannabis or similar highly regulated categories preferred).
  • Excellent typography, layout hierarchy, and production accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple SKUs and product launches simultaneously.
