Job Overview

ThunderYard Solutions is seeking an Expert Software Developer with extensive experience in Java Spring Boot and React to lead the development of modern, scalable enterprise applications for Veterans Affairs. This role is designed for a highly seasoned engineer who can influence architecture, mentor teams, and remain hands-on with coding.

You will collaborate with architects, product owners, and senior stakeholders to translate business and mission needs into robust technical solutions. The position requires independent work, technical leadership, and strong collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Java Development & Troubleshooting

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for the Java codebase
  • Own application flow, debug complex issues, and guide team best practices

Develop with Modern Spring Frameworks

  • Build and enhance applications using Spring Boot, Spring Batch, Spring Security
  • Ensure high performance, reliability, and security

Integrate with Azure Entra ID

  • Support identity and access management, including OAuth2, RBAC, and authentication flows

Build & Own Automated CI/CD Pipelines

  • Transition manual deployments to automated pipelines using GitHub
  • Lead deployment troubleshooting and release management

Operate in a High-Pace Environment

  • Deliver scalable, high-quality solutions under tight timelines
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers, fostering a strong technical culture

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
  • 15+ years of professional software development experience
  • Expert-level proficiency in Java and Spring Boot
  • Strong experience with React for front-end development
  • Deep understanding of:
    • Microservices & service-oriented architectures
    • RESTful APIs and web services (SOAP is a plus)
    • Object-oriented design, design patterns, and system architecture
  • Experience across full SDLC: design, development, testing, deployment, support
  • Hands-on experience with relational databases (Oracle, SQL Server, etc.) and ORM frameworks like JPA/Hibernate
  • Strong debugging, performance tuning, and troubleshooting skills
  • Experience in Agile/Scrum environments
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior/mid-level developers
  • Must be able to obtain a VA Medium-Background Investigation clearance

Additional Desired Skills

  • Containerization & Cloud-native development using Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift
  • CI/CD and automation tools like Jenkins
  • BPM/workflow tools such as Camunda
  • Experience with AWS services and cloud-based architectures
