Job Description
⚡ Director – Energy Delivery (Data Centers)
This is a senior leadership role responsible for how large hyperscale data centers get power — from utilities and onsite generation (solar, batteries, microgrids, etc.).
You are essentially leading energy strategy + infrastructure delivery for multi-billion-dollar campuses.
🧭 What This Role Actually Does
1️⃣ Energy Strategy Leadership
You decide:
- Where power will come from
- How much capacity is needed
- Utility interconnection strategy
- Renewable integration
- Backup and resiliency architecture
This is strategic + technical leadership, not hands-on engineering.
2️⃣ Utility & Power Infrastructure Development
You manage:
- Utility negotiations
- Power purchase agreements (PPAs)
- Grid interconnections
- Substations
- Onsite generation systems
For hyperscale data centers, power capacity can be:
100 MW – 500 MW+ per campus
That’s similar to powering a small city.
3️⃣ Distributed Energy & Innovation
Technologies involved:
- Solar PV
- Wind procurement
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Microgrids
- Diesel / gas generators
- Small Modular Reactors (future nuclear)
This role sits at the intersection of:
Energy industry + Data center industry
4️⃣ Project Delivery Oversight
You lead projects from:
Concept → Design → Permitting → Construction → Commissioning → Operations
You don’t design directly — you lead teams that do.
5️⃣ Stakeholder Management
You coordinate with:
- Utilities
- Regulators
- Engineering firms
- Construction teams
- Internal executives
- Customers (hyperscalers like cloud companies)
Communication skills are critical.
🎓 Experience Level Required
This is NOT a mid-career job.
Typical candidate:
- 10–20+ years experience
- Power infrastructure background
- Utility or renewable energy experience
- Large project leadership
- Engineering + business understanding
Common backgrounds:
- Electrical Engineering
- Power Systems Engineering
- Energy Infrastructure Development
- Utility companies
- EPC firms
- Renewable developers
💰 Salary Level
Listed range:
- $180k – $200k base
- Bonus + stock possible
Total compensation can reach:
$220k – $300k+ annually
This is executive-track compensation.
🌍 Why This Role Is Important in Data Centers
Power is the biggest constraint in AI and cloud growth.
Modern data centers require:

Energy directors are now among the most critical roles in the industry.
🚀 Career Path to Reach This Level
Typical progression:
- Electrical Engineer / Power Engineer
- Senior Engineer
- Energy Program Manager
- Director / Senior Director
- VP Energy / Infrastructure
It usually takes 12–20 years to reach this level.
