Data Science Intern

Job Description

Velera seeks a Data Science Intern to support data analysis and machine learning projects within a leading fintech CUSO.

Your Role

Key responsibilities include:
• Supporting efforts to collect, clean, and validate data
• Contributing to quantitative and qualitative analysis using statistical techniques and methods
• Assisting in the training and testing of machine learning models
• Analyzing and visualizing data for presentation to key stakeholders

About You

The company is looking for candidates who meet the following qualifications:
• Currently enrolled in a BS/MS/PhD or equivalent program in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a similar field
• Experience with big data platforms such as Databricks or Snowflake preferred
• Proficiency in SQL
• Understanding of machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost, DBScan, LSTMs
• Understanding of Generative AI models such as GANs, LLMs
• Proficiency in one or more programming languages: R, Python, Scala
• Experience with open source development tools (e.g., Git, PyCharm, Maven)
• Experience developing in notebook environments
• Completion of sophomore or junior year in an accredited undergraduate degree program with a minimum 3.0 GPA at time of application
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
• Strong organizational, detail-oriented, critical thinking, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Ability to adjust easily to changing directions and priorities
• Proficiency in MS Office Suite®, especially Excel
