Job Description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is hiring a Data Center Controls Engineer to support Building Management Systems (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS) across its global data center infrastructure. This role combines controls engineering, troubleshooting, and project management to ensure reliable operations of mission-critical facilities.

Role Overview

As part of the global controls team, you will:

  • Maintain and troubleshoot BMS and EPMS systems across operational data centers.
  • Lead controls improvement projects from scope through execution.
  • Support lifecycle operations of electrical and mechanical infrastructure.
  • Develop standards, processes, and innovations aligned with AWS leadership principles.

AWS data centers include complex systems such as:

  • Generators, UPS, switchgear, PDUs
  • Transfer switches and VFDs
  • Chillers (air & water cooled), cooling towers, pumps
  • CRAH units and economizers
  • Heat exchangers and mechanical plant equipment

The BMS controls mechanical systems, while the EPMS monitors electrical infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and perform root cause analysis (RCA) for controls-related issues.
  • Assist teams with design, configuration, validation, commissioning, and operation of BMS/EPMS.
  • Provide technical support throughout the data center lifecycle.
  • Develop project scope, schedule, and budgets for controls improvements.
  • Manage project execution, procurement, and vendor coordination.
  • Participate in the global on-call rotation for technical support.
  • Review and improve sequence of operations (SOO) and control logic.
  • Develop or modify programming and graphical interfaces.
  • Manage service contracts and financial aspects of controls systems.
  • Visit operational sites to supervise vendors and ensure compliance.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Related technical field
  • Experience developing designs from concept through deployment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows systems.
  • Experience with power monitoring or power management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of project management in data centers or critical infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Data center electrical and mechanical equipment
    • Engineering documentation and diagrams
    • Building codes (NFPA, NEC, OSHA, Life Safety, etc.)
  • Experience in data center engineering operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.

Location & Compensation

  • Location: Fredericksburg, Virginia (USA)
  • Salary Range: $111,300 – $186,100 per year
  • Additional compensation may include:
