Position Summary

Walmart’s Customer Decision Science team, part of the Customer Insights & Strategy organization within Marketing, leverages large-scale customer data across stores, web, and mobile platforms to improve customer experience and loyalty.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you will lead analytics initiatives focused on Walmart’s High Value Habits programs, identifying key drivers of customer engagement and retention. This role combines advanced analytics, business strategy, and cross-functional leadership to influence high-impact decisions at the world’s largest retailer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead advanced analytics initiatives to improve customer loyalty, engagement, and retention.
  • Identify business growth opportunities through large-scale customer data analysis and translate findings into actionable strategies.
  • Design and implement quantitative frameworks such as:
    • Causal inference models
    • Propensity modeling
    • Cohort analysis
    • Experimental and quasi-experimental methodologies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Data Engineering, Product, Marketing, Finance, and Strategy.
  • Develop scalable data assets, including User Defined Functions (UDFs), to standardize business logic.
  • Influence executive decision-making by presenting insights and recommendations to leadership.
  • Promote reproducible research and best practices across analytics teams.
  • Lead projects end-to-end with high ownership and minimal supervision.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3–5+ years of experience in data science or analytics, or
  • Master’s degree with 2–3+ years of experience, or
  • PhD with 2+ years of experience.
  • Advanced SQL expertise (BigQuery or Hive preferred).
  • Strong proficiency in Python or R for modeling, simulation, and visualization.
  • Experience with clickstream data, customer analytics, and large-scale behavioral datasets.
  • Expertise in experimental design and causal inference methods (e.g., Propensity Score Matching, Difference-in-Differences).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in ambiguous environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing internal analytics packages or reusable frameworks.
  • Deep experience with cloud data platforms (GCP, BigQuery, Snowflake).
  • Experience mentoring junior data scientists and conducting code reviews.
  • Background in retail, e-commerce, or omni-channel customer analytics.

Compensation

  • Hoboken, NJ: $108,000 – $216,000 annually
  • San Bruno / Sunnyvale, CA: $117,000 – $234,000 annually
  • Additional compensation may include bonuses and stock awards.
