Role Overview
The Specialist – Data Center Operations is responsible for supporting the design, operation, and optimization of mission-critical mechanical systems within data center environments. The role focuses on troubleshooting, root cause analysis, system performance improvement, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure reliability, efficiency, and operational excellence.
This position requires strong knowledge of HVAC, cooling infrastructure, and building control systems used in large-scale critical facilities such as data centers, hospitals, or power plants.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Systems & Operations
- Support solutions for mechanical issues arising during design and operation of mission-critical systems.
- Work closely with engineering and operations teams to achieve performance and reliability objectives.
- Assist with commissioning documentation, construction drawings, and test scripts.
- Stay updated with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
- Investigate system performance issues and contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and Corrective Actions (CA).
- Analyze operational data to identify trends and efficiency improvement opportunities.
- Support optimization initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reliability.
Engineering Calculations & Analysis
- Perform and support:
- Fluid flow and heat transfer calculations
- Psychrometric analysis
- Energy efficiency calculations (kW/Ton, EER, IPLV)
- Pump and fan performance analysis
- Assist with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling activities.
Controls & Automation
- Develop working knowledge of:
- Building Management Systems (BMS)
- PLC-based industrial control systems
- SCADA and automation networks
- Data communication protocols and actuator systems
Compliance & Standards
- Apply knowledge of industry standards and regulations including:
- ASHRAE TC 9.9
- ASME
- NFPA
- OSHA
- Building and life safety codes
- Support environmental and operational compliance requirements.
Technical Knowledge Areas
- Air-cooled chillers and chilled water systems
- CRAC / CRAH units
- Pumps, valves, piping, and ductwork
- HVAC and air handling systems
- Water treatment systems
- Industrial and domestic water distribution
- Storm and sanitary drainage systems
- Data center containment strategies
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineering certification preferred/required depending on region.
Experience
- Minimum 8 years of experience in:
- Data centers or mission-critical facilities
- Large-scale technical operations
- Experience with CFD modeling.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE data center thermal guidelines and PUE concepts.
- Experience managing temperature, humidity, and environmental controls in data centers.
