Boston, MA – $184,900 – $250,200 USD annually

🚀 Role Overview

AWS is seeking an exceptional Software Development Manager (SDM) to lead engineering innovation for Amazon FSx for Lustre, a fully managed, high-performance cloud file storage service.

Amazon FSx for Lustre powers mission-critical workloads such as:

  • GPU-intensive AI/ML workloads
  • High-Performance Computing (HPC)
  • Enterprise-scale applications
  • Large-scale analytics pipelines

Launched in 2018, FSx for Lustre has become a foundational storage service for customers running some of the largest and most performance-sensitive workloads on AWS.

This is a leadership role requiring deep technical expertise, strong people management skills, and the ability to drive high-scale distributed systems innovation.

🛠 Key Responsibilities

👥 Engineering Leadership

  • Lead a team of software engineers delivering high-performance, reliable AWS services
  • Hire, mentor, coach, and promote engineering talent
  • Establish strong operational excellence and engineering standards
  • Drive mechanisms that ensure scalability, reliability, and performance

🧠 Technical Strategy & Architecture

  • Partner with Product Managers, Principal Engineers, and Senior Leadership to define technical vision and roadmap
  • Design and architect distributed, multi-tier web services at AWS scale
  • Ensure engineering best practices across the full development lifecycle:
    • Coding standards
    • Code reviews
    • Source control
    • Build processes
    • Testing and certification
    • Live-site operations

🤝 Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work across AWS teams to build new cloud storage solutions
  • Engage directly with customers to understand workload requirements
  • Translate business goals into scalable technical execution plans

🧩 About the Team – Utility Computing (UC)

The Utility Computing (UC) organization delivers foundational AWS services including:

  • Amazon S3
  • Amazon EC2
  • Storage, Compute, Database, IoT, and Platform services

As part of UC, you will support customers with highly scalable, secure, and performance-driven cloud services, including specialized security solutions for enterprise workloads.

🎓 Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience
  • 7+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams
  • 3+ years of system design/architecture experience (design patterns, reliability, scalability)
  • 8+ years of experience leading the definition and development of multi-tier web services
  • Strong knowledge of full software development lifecycle best practices
  • Experience partnering with Product or Program Management teams

  • Experience communicating with customers, technical teams, and senior leadership
  • Strong ability to describe product strategy, technical designs, and roadmap execution
  • Experience recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and developing high-performing software engineers
  • Track record of building scalable distributed systems
