Job Overview

GE Vernova is seeking a Senior Power Systems Engineer (HVDC) to join its world-class engineering and research team. This role is critical to enabling the global energy transition by developing next-generation HVDC technologies and advanced power transmission solutions.

As a senior technical leader, you will drive innovation through advanced modeling, power system studies, and R&D programs across GE Vernova’s energy businesses—including Grid Solutions, Electrification Software, Power Conversion & Storage, Wind, Gas Power, Nuclear, and Hydro—while collaborating with U.S. Government agencies such as the Department of Energy.

This position offers an exceptional opportunity to work end-to-end on HVDC systems—from concept and design to prototyping, validation, and product introduction—within a globally recognized expert team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced HVDC system studies, including:
    • Steady-state, dynamic, and transient stability analysis
    • Harmonics and power quality studies
  • Develop and review technical specifications for HVDC systems, equipment, and engineering services in compliance with international standards
  • Support project development phases including feasibility studies, conceptual design, and Front-End Engineering Design (FEED)
  • Evaluate grid code compliance and its impact on HVDC projects
  • Lead technical discussions and negotiations with suppliers, manufacturers, and contractors
  • Document innovations through patents, technical reports, and publications
  • Transfer developed technologies into GE Vernova engineering teams for product integration
  • Collaborate with internal teams, national laboratories, universities, suppliers, and industry partners
  • Stay current with emerging power system and inverter-based technologies

Required Qualifications

  • Education & Experience
    • PhD in Engineering with 7+ years of experience
      OR
    • Master’s degree in Engineering with 10+ years of experience
    • Proven background in inverter-based resource (IBR) interconnections with transmission systems
  • Technical Experience
    • 3–5 years of power system simulations (power flow, short-circuit, dynamic & transient stability)
    • 3–5 years hands-on experience with tools such as:
      • PSCAD-EMTDC
      • PSS®E
      • EMTP
      • RTDS
      • Opal-RT
    • 3–5 years of interconnection or power system planning studies

Desired Skills & Expertise

  • Deep understanding of HVDC technologies:
    • VSC and LCC HVDC systems
    • Multiterminal HVDC networks, protection, and control
  • Experience with inverter-based systems:
    • HVDC converters, wind/solar converters, STATCOM, SVC, filters, drives
  • Knowledge of HVDC equipment:
    • Submarine and land cables, converter transformers, breakers, reactors, surge arresters
  • Experience with:
    • Real-time simulation and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing
    • Transient overvoltage and insulation coordination
    • Harmonic mitigation and performance design
  • Familiarity with standards such as IEEE 2800
  • Strong communication skills with senior leadership, customers, and regulators (TSOs, ISOs)
  • Program management experience, including schedules, milestones, funding, and technical reviews
  • Proven ability to take innovative concepts from idea to product

Compensation & Benefits

Salary Range (U.S.):
💰 $113,200 – $188,800 per year
(Geographic differentials of 110%–130% may apply)
