About the Role
Optomi is seeking a Senior Full Stack Java Developer with strong backend expertise in Java/Spring Boot, Kafka, and AWS to modernize critical systems in mechanical operations for locomotives, railcars, and detector networks. The role focuses on refactoring legacy microservices, scaling IoT data pipelines, and building cloud-native, resilient architectures that process millions of operational and safety data points.
Responsibilities
- Modernize legacy microservices and distributed systems supporting mechanical operations.
- Design and implement backend services using Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, and event-driven patterns.
- Scale high-volume IoT data pipelines (30M+ sensor/detector data points).
- Refactor and maintain rules-engine frameworks (600+ rulesets).
- Contribute to cloud-native development on AWS (Azure acceptable).
- Use Python for backend workflows, automation, and data processing tasks.
- Build automated CI/CD pipelines and testing frameworks following DevSecOps best practices.
- Optimize relational databases (Postgres) for high-volume applications.
- Mentor junior developers and drive technical leadership.
- Collaborate across teams to deliver modern, scalable, and high-performance systems.
Required Skills & Experience
- 6+ years of full-stack experience with backend emphasis in Java/Spring Boot.
- Strong expertise in event-driven architecture and Kafka.
- Proven experience modernizing legacy microservices and distributed systems.
- Hands-on AWS Cloud experience; cloud-agnostic mindset preferred.
- Experience handling IoT or high-volume sensor data pipelines.
- Strong relational DB skills (Postgres preferred).
- Proficiency in Python for backend/data workflows.
- DevSecOps mindset: automated testing, CI/CD, secure coding.
- Ability to mentor junior engineers and lead technical initiatives.
