Maisha Meds is on a mission to improve healthcare across East Africa. Since 2017, we’ve supported 1.5 million patient encounters annually across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Nigeria, and Zambia through our suite of software products.

Our programs focus on malaria case management, injectable contraceptives, HIV self-tests, prenatal care, and COVID testing & vaccination, using data-driven solutions to improve access, quality, and affordability of healthcare for low-income patients.

We are funded by USAID Development Innovation Ventures, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, Pfizer, and more. We are building partnerships with global health funders, pharmaceutical companies, and national health insurance funds to expand our impact.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior/Lead Software Engineer to drive the next phase of our loyalty program and help scale our healthcare technology across multiple countries. You will lead backend and web development, collaborate closely with our tech team, and deliver high-quality, scalable solutions.

This role offers the flexibility to work remotely while contributing to life-saving healthcare technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of backend and web-based features.
  • Collaborate with tech team, researchers, and global stakeholders.
  • Scope complex, abstract problems into concrete, manageable tasks.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • Build and maintain REST APIs and scalable software systems.
  • Support development in environments with limited or intermittent Internet connectivity.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster a collaborative, inclusive team culture.

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience building high-quality applications.
  • Proven experience in Ruby on Rails development.
  • Solid front-end experience with React (Vue.js is a plus).
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, testing, and code quality best practices.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a culturally diverse, distributed team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building systems for low-connectivity environments.
  • Prior experience leading technical projects or teams.
  • Familiarity with remote-first collaboration tools and agile development practices.
