Job Description

Are you a talented WordPress developer who thrives on building features used by millions of pet lovers every month? We’re looking for a Lead Web Developer to maintain, enhance, and innovate across our WordPress and WooCommerce sites. This is a 100% remote, full-time role (40 hours/week), with the freedom to plan your schedule while being a key contributor to our rapidly growing team.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the web development team and catch up on backlogs of tasks
  • Hire and mentor 1-2 developers in your department within 3–4 months
  • Develop, test, and maintain new features and solutions for WordPress sites (desktop & mobile)
  • Proactively secure WordPress sites, prevent hacks, and eliminate risks
  • Collaborate with content and marketing teams on IT/development requests
  • Create, review, and maintain technical documentation, development processes, and QA procedures
  • Optimize site performance, speed, and reduce ad/display clutter
  • Build and improve the Hepper.com e-commerce experience (checkout, product pages, analytics setup)
  • Innovate new tools or calculators (e.g., Puppy Weight Chart Tool) for millions of pet owners

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong backend development expertise (frontend design support is secondary)
  • HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and PHP
  • WordPress development (themes, hooks, filters, plugin API)
  • MySQL and database management
  • Composer, dependency management, and autoloading
  • SSH, Git/GitHub, and terminal usage
  • Troubleshooting (CSS/JS conflicts, plugin/theme issues, debugging)
  • Build tools like Webpack or ViteJS
  • Strong communication skills—essential for remote collaboration
