⚡ Role Overview
AWS is seeking a High Voltage (HV) Substation Commissioning Engineer to join the AMER Amazon Commissioning (ACx) Team. This role is responsible for commissioning and driving innovation in Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure supporting AWS’s rapidly expanding data center footprint.
This position is based in Herndon, VA, and requires travel.
You will oversee multi-disciplinary commissioning activities for critical infrastructure construction and special projects while ensuring compliance with Amazon standards for safety, quality, and performance.
🛠 Key Responsibilities
Commissioning & Project Oversight
- Oversee and coordinate pre-commissioning and commissioning of Amazon critical infrastructure projects.
- Manage and support vendors throughout commissioning phases.
- Provide multi-disciplinary input into project scheduling, design, and planning.
- Lead concurrent projects to meet aggressive delivery timelines.
- Audit commissioning activities to ensure environmental, safety, and quality compliance.
- Report commissioning progress and metrics to the ACx Regional Manager.

Documentation & Technical Review
- Review commissioning documents for compliance with basis of design and project standards.
- Develop and review pre-functional checklists, startup procedures, and functional test scripts.
- Evaluate vendor submittals and sequences of operation.
- Provide technical feedback aligned with Amazon standards.
🏗 Physical Requirements
- Walk job sites in uneven terrain
- Work at heights and from ladders
- Lift/move up to 49 lbs (group lifts for 50+ lbs)
- Work extended shifts including nights and weekends
- Work in hot, cold, or noisy environments
- Manipulate small wires and equipment
- Respond to emergency off-hour calls
- Perform troubleshooting using handheld diagnostic equipment
🎓 Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of engineering, installation, startup, or commissioning experience in HV/MV substation electrical systems
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering OR 5 years of relevant discipline experience
- Strong ability to review and interpret:
- Electrical drawings & specifications
- Control diagrams
- Test scripts & checklists
- Vendor submittals
- Sequences of operation
- Experience developing MV/HV/EHV:
- Pre-functional checklists
- Startup procedures
- Functional test scripts
- Vendor management experience
- Knowledge of AIS/GIS switchgear, relays, transformers, grounding systems
⭐ Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- SharePoint (or similar systems)
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical, electrical & controls systems for critical infrastructure
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments
- Experience developing and executing test procedures based on design intent
- Ability to read and edit construction documentation

💰 Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary Range:
Herndon, VA – $116,800 to $160,000 USD annually
