Graphic Designer / Technical Coordinator

The Graphic Designer / Technical Coordinator plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient, accurate, and timely completion of all graphic design work to meet customer expectations and production schedules. Collaborating closely with management members, the Graphics Team, and Production Staff, this individual will lead the planning, scheduling, and execution of graphic workflows while producing high-quality artwork for flexographic and digital printing.

As a key team member, the Senior Graphic Artist will drive continuous improvement initiatives, support team development, and maintain high-quality and color management standards.

Key Responsibilities

Planning & Scheduling

  • Develop and maintain daily plans for the Graphics Team, ensuring balanced workloads and adherence to internal cycle time standards.
  • Monitor and adjust work schedules in response to changing priorities and constraints, collaborating with the management members and Production Scheduler.
  • Validate that all incoming jobs align with established art charge structures and time estimates.
  • Present daily plans during Department Planning Meetings and track internal cycle times, reporting results and recommending solutions to improve efficiency.
  • Serve as the liaison between Graphics, Plate Making, and other departments to ensure seamless workflow and communication.

Graphic Design & Production

  • Process customer-provided samples, sketches, and electronic files to create artwork aligned with flexographic and digital printing specifications.
  • Build, modify, and proof graphics, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, including size, color separation, and printing marks.
  • Apply advanced techniques for separations, traps, bleeds, bump curves, cutbacks, and screen angles for flexo printing.
  • Produce and verify printable barcodes and ensure the accuracy of laser/inkjet and press-accurate proofs.
  • Exercise sound judgment in adapting artwork to meet plate making and printing process requirements.

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Actively mentor and support the growth of the Graphics Team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
  • Participate in print project launch meetings and collaborate with internal teams, including Customer Service, Quality Assurance, and Production, to address customer specifications and ensure project success.
  • Assist in creating and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all graphics processes, ensuring clarity and consistency.
  • Lead initiatives to introduce and implement new technologies, such as variable data printing and creative product lines.

Maintenance & Technology Management

  • Oversee and maintain the performance of graphics-related equipment, including printers, servers, workflows, and Esko software.
  • Schedule and perform updates, troubleshoot issues, and manage repairs to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Maintain and calibrate color management systems like the Epson Stylus Pro GMG Proofer to ensure accurate color matching.
  • Support the Plate Department by assisting with troubleshooting, maintenance schedules, and plate filing.

Continuous Improvement & Special Projects

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts, identifying opportunities to enhance workflow efficiency, quality, and team performance.
  • Organize and streamline die project data, updating SOPs and ensuring proper labeling and file management.
  • Research and implement best practices for job setup and creative design, training team members on new procedures and technologies.
  • Act as a key contributor to special projects, including developing variable data processes and exploring new product opportunities in collaboration with Sales and Production teams.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, Visual Arts, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in graphic design, focusing on flexographic and digital printing.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and Esko software.
  • Strong understanding of color management, prepress processes, and printing technologies.
  • Familiarity with variable data printing and digital workflows.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to mentor, train, and motivate team members.
  • Problem-solving: Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and present plans effectively.
