Role Overview
We are hiring Golang Engineers at all levels of seniority to join multiple product and platform teams across Canonical.
If Go is your preferred language, this role gives you the flexibility to work on the product that best aligns with your interests after the initial interview stage.
Golang is a core language at Canonical, used to build and operate the systems that deliver Ubuntu worldwide—where performance, security, and scalability matter most.
What You’ll Work On
Canonical’s Golang projects power many flagship products, including:
- Juju
- LXD
- MAAS
- MicroK8s
- Snapd
- Livepatch
- Ubuntu Core & Ubuntu Pro
You’ll help ensure Ubuntu remains the best platform for Golang development, supporting cutting-edge open-source and enterprise tooling.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and document high-quality software in Go
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve production and user-reported issues
- Participate in code reviews and architectural discussions
- Collaborate with internal teams and the open-source community
- Improve engineering workflows and operational practices
- Deploy and operate services (role-dependent)
- Advocate for technical excellence and product quality
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Strong experience developing Golang software on Linux
- Deep passion for Linux systems (Ubuntu/Debian preferred)
- Excellent written and spoken English
- Self-driven, organized, and delivery-focused mindset
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, distributed team
- Willingness to travel twice yearly for company events (up to 2 weeks)
Background Expectations
- Exceptional academic track record (or a compelling alternative path)
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a STEM field (preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to exceed expectations and deliver results
For Senior Engineers
- Experience designing, deploying, and operating distributed systems
- API design, performance optimization, and system reliability expertise
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience contributing to Ubuntu or Debian
- Familiarity with Juju, LXD, MicroK8s, Snapd, Ubuntu Core/Pro
- Performance engineering or security-focused development
- Exposure to Python, C/C++, or Rust
