About the Role

As a Backend Web Developer, you will design, develop, and maintain server-side logic and database systems that power multiple websites and digital platforms. You’ll collaborate closely with frontend developers, communications teams, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance web applications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend components and services
  • Integrate user-facing elements with server-side logic
  • Collaborate on website strategy and prioritization
  • Implement and manage databases with strong data integrity and security
  • Write clean, scalable, and efficient code following best practices (including ADA compliance standards)
  • Troubleshoot and debug applications for performance optimization
  • Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 2–3 years of experience as a Backend Developer or similar role
  • Proficiency in server-side languages such as:
    • Python
    • Java
    • Ruby
    • Node.js
  • Experience with database systems (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
  • Understanding of RESTful APIs and web services
  • Familiarity with agile development methodologies
  • Knowledge of security protocols and data protection measures

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with PHP and JavaScript (especially WordPress integrations)
  • Experience with cloud services (AWS, Azure)
  • Experience with containerization (Docker)
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (ADA compliance)

Compensation Transparency

CALSTART provides a full salary range of $85,000 – $103,000 per year.
