Position Summary
The Part-Time Adult Education & Literacy Instructor provides high-quality instruction to adult learners in English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), or High School Equivalency (HSE) programs. This role involves planning, delivering, assessing, and documenting instruction while supporting adult learners in achieving academic, workforce, and life goals.
Primary Responsibilities
Instruction
- Deliver instruction in ESL, ABE, HSE, or other Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) services as assigned
- Apply research-based instructional strategies, including technology-enhanced learning
- Utilize effective reading, writing, and math instructional methods
- Implement diverse teaching strategies tailored to adult learner needs
- Develop lesson plans that integrate multiple content areas
- Provide continuous feedback and adjust instruction to maximize learning outcomes
- Collaborate with colleagues to develop and evaluate curriculum and instructional materials
- Integrate work-, family-, and community-related activities into instruction
- Administer and interpret placement and diagnostic assessments
- Apply adult learning principles in workforce and classroom settings
- Facilitate transfer of learning from classroom to workplace
- Customize curriculum and lesson plans aligned with workforce goals and training outcomes
- Plan and coordinate instructional support activities for academic assistants
- Maintain and submit required program documentation
- Perform other duties as assigned
Assessment & Student Progress Monitoring
- Use formal and informal assessments to document and monitor student progress
- Maintain accurate data for program accountability and continuous improvement
- Participate in student retention and follow-up efforts
- Maintain Individual Training, Education, and Career Plans (ITEC)
- Support students in achieving Measurable Skills Gains (MSGs)
Classroom & Program Management
- Maintain knowledge of program policies, procedures, and regulations
- Manage and maintain student records
- Supervise and support academic assistants
Community Engagement
- Refer students to community agencies and postsecondary institutions as appropriate
- Advocate for adult education at the local and state level
- Promote adult education programs within the community
- Assess local adult education needs
- Collaborate with community partners and agencies
- Assist with student recruitment and program placement
Professional Development
- Participate in required paid professional development
- Use technology tools for continuous learning and professional growth
- Assess strengths and areas for improvement to support ongoing professional development
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Degree in Education or a related content area preferred
Experience
- Prior teaching experience required
- Adult education experience preferred but not required
